Generative Fill empowers you to add, remove, or expand content in your images using simple text prompts. From adding birds in the sky to a landscape photo to erasing a distracting car from a scene, you can make content in powerful new ways. Try these expert tips to make Generative Fill work for you.

TIP 1/7

Keep language direct and descriptive.

A prompt describes what you want to see. Keep the language direct and visually descriptive—no instructions needed.

Try: “beach ball and shells”

Avoid: “add some cool beach toys with shells next to them to my photo”

TIP 2/7

Stick to one action at a time.

For the best result, add one thing at a time to your photo.

Try: “desert island” + “coconut trees” + “sail boat”

Avoid: “desert island with coconut trees and a sail boat in the background”

TIP 3/7

Make selections roughly the same size and shape as what you want to create.

When adding content, make your selection about the size and shape as what you’d like to generate. This will improve precision. Generative Fill will generate new pixels for the entire area of your selection, so the more specific the better.

Try: selecting only the area of the photo you want to change

Avoid: making large, imprecise selections

TIP 4/7

When removing content, avoid tight selections.

Make selections include the area around the object you want to erase. This allows Generative Fill to fill in the image with contextual clues. Make sure your selection includes all aspects of the object (like its shadow) that you want to see gone.

Try: using a rectangular selection for the elements you want
to remove

Avoid: tightly selecting only the subject you want to remove

TIP 5/7

You can leave the prompt blank
to remove content.

When removing something from your photo, you can leave the prompt blank or include simple commands like “remove” or “erase.”

Try: blank prompt

Avoid: “get rid of that beach ball in the photo”

TIP 6/7

If you want an expanded image to look like what’s already there, leave the prompt blank.

As part of the Crop workflow, Generative Expand can automatically expand an image to give you more space. If you leave the prompt blank, we’ll fill in the selection with newly generated content that naturally blends with the existing image.

Try: blank prompt

Avoid: “add more of the surrounding beach to my photo”

TIP 7/7

Have some fun.

As with any new feature, it can take some practice to get the vision in your mind to appear on the screen. Experiment with Generative Fill to see how it can work for you — and enjoy the creative journey.
